Your thoughts on health insurance...?
When you get car insurance, it doesn't cover oil changes, tune-ups, spark plug replacement, and other typical maintenance, just major costly items that are unreasonable to save up for or anticipate. When you get home owners insurance, it doesn't cover repainting, replacing a broken toilet, or replacing worn out carpet, just big cost items that occur when something goes drastically wrong. And people seem to be able to take care of all these things just fine without having insurance for it.
So, why is everyone's health insurance involved in things like their normal doctor visits and such? Shouldn't people plan ahead to pay for these routine costs like they do for their cars and homes?
Just my thoughts. What do you think?
In short, shouldn't health insurance only be used to cover very costly or life-threatening conditions, instead of everything down to routine doctor visits?
I've made this exact argument. Health insurance costs so much in part because it's not just used for expensive or catastrophic incidents. The idea with insurance is that all subscribers pool their money, instead of just putting the money into personal savings, in case of the unlikely event that anyone will need it. When health insurance is used more like a discount plan rather than a last a resort, then the cost just skyrockets.
