Anticipating Puzzle Quest: Galactrix
What is Puzzle Quest? Well, if you've never played it, the best way I can think to describe it is that it's like Bejeweled meets an RPG. Each person picks a character and they battle it out by making matches and using power ups. A single person can also play a story mode on their own, but I prefer playing against my boyfriend.
For some time now, they've been talking about releasing Galactrix, the sequel to Puzzle Quest. The latest rumors say it'll be released for the Xbox 360 on February 24th, 2009. My boyfriend and I can't wait for either the PS3 or PC versions, which are going to be released at some point after that.
The plot of Galactrix is that mega corporations have taken over the galaxy. Your job is to be a pilot and try to find and stop one of the mega corporations from conducting dangerous experiments. So, as you travel, you'll be able to go from a novice pilot to an expert in your quest to save the galaxy.
One thing about Galactrix that I am really looking forward to trying to figure out is the gravity. Galactrix takes place in space, so the game creators have decided to involve gravity, just to add a little extra challenge.
Apparently, if you're battling in space new pieces will come from whatever direction you made your last move in. On the other hand, orbiting around a planet means that pieces will always fall downward.
Oh, and by the way, pieces in Galactrix are Hexagonal, unlike the round pieces in the original. So, there are now going to be a lot more options for where to move the tiles. That means players are really going to have to think about what to move and what result they'll get much harder.
Another great thing I'm looking forward to about Galactrix is that, as you win more, you get the ability to upgrade your ship and weapons. You can even get companions to help you on your way. On top of that, you can find special items to help you. You can also collect currency and use it to help you in your quest.
One of the major changes that sounds interesting is that, unlike the first Puzzle Quest, Galactrix has no skulls. Instead, there are number tiles. The idea of these tiles is that the damage you do will be calculated by adding the totals on any of the number tiles that you use. It sounds like an interesting idea. I can't wait to see how it plays out.
All in all, it sounds like Galactrix is going to be a really cool game. The only trouble is I don't think it's really going to be much like the original at all. After all, the original featured druids, and knights and sorcerers, not space pilots. It sounds like it's gonna be excellent as a stand alone game, though, as long as you don't play it thinking it'll be like the original.
